7 Simple Ways to Save Money on Everyday Household Expenses

Image
With the cost of living constantly increasing, running a household can be expensive. Sometimes, it feels as though money disappears almost as soon as it enters your account. The good news is that saving money doesn't always mean depriving yourself or your family of everything you enjoy. Sometimes, small changes in the way we spend can make a difference over time. Here are seven simple ways to reduce everyday household expenses. 1. Plan Your Meals Before Shopping One of the easiest ways to waste money is buying food without a plan. Before going to the market or supermarket, think about the meals your family will eat for the next few days and make a shopping list. Try to stick to the list as much as possible. This can help reduce impulse buying and prevent food from going bad before it is used. 2. Buy Frequently Used Items Wisely For items your household uses regularly, buying larger quantities can sometimes save money. However, don't buy something in bulk simply because it loo...

10 Things That Can Make Mornings Easier for Busy Nigerian Mothers

Image
Mornings can be one of the busiest parts of the day, especially when you have children to prepare, food to sort out and a hundred other things waiting for your attention. Some mornings go smoothly. Other mornings feel like everybody suddenly needs you at the same time.  While there is no perfect routine for every family, a few simple habits can make busy mornings feel less stressful. 1. Prepare Some Things the Night Before If possible, prepare school clothes, bags, shoes or other important items before going to bed. This can save you from searching for a missing sock when everybody is already running late. 2. Wake Up a Little Earlier Even an extra 15 or 20 minutes can make a difference. You don't necessarily need to wake up extremely early. The goal is simply to give yourself a little time before the house becomes busy. 3. Keep Important Items in One Place Keys, school bags, water bottles and other frequently used items can easily disappear when you need them most. Having a regular...

Simple Ways to Make Your Home Feel Better Without Spending Too Much Money

Image
You don't always need to buy expensive furniture or completely renovate your house to make your home feel better. Sometimes, a few simple changes can make a surprisingly big difference. And if you're like most Nigerian families, you probably already have enough things in the house. The real challenge may not be buying more—it may be knowing what to rearrange, remove or improve. Here are some simple ideas that can make your home feel more comfortable without spending a fortune. 1. Rearrange Your Furniture Before buying anything new, look at what you already have. Moving your sofa, centre table or other furniture can completely change the appearance of a room. Try different arrangements until you find one that gives people enough space to move around comfortably. Sometimes, your room doesn't need new furniture. It just needs a new arrangement. 2. Declutter Little by Little A home can feel untidy even when it has been cleaned if there are too many things lying around. You do...

Why Everything Goes Viral So Quickly in Nigeria Today

Image
Have you ever woken up, checked your phone and discovered that everyone is talking about something you knew absolutely nothing about? Welcome to life on Nigerian social media.  These days, a story can start with one person's post and, within a few hours, find its way onto WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and eventually blogs and news platforms. Sometimes it is an important story. Sometimes it is something funny. And sometimes, honestly, you're left wondering, "How did this even become news?" Social media has changed everything Years ago, people depended mainly on television, newspapers, radio and blogs to find out what was happening. Today, information travels differently. Someone can record an interesting incident with their phone, upload it online and suddenly thousands or even millions of people are watching it. Social media has made everyone a potential storyteller. You don't necessarily need a television station or newspaper office anymore. If people f...

Motherhood Is Beautiful, But Nobody Prepared Me for This Part

Image
Motherhood is beautiful, but let me be honest: nobody fully prepared me for how much motherhood would change me. Before becoming a mother, I knew there would be sleepless nights, feeding, school runs, washing clothes and all the other responsibilities that come with raising children. What I didn't fully understand was how much of my mind would always be occupied by my children. You are always thinking about them Even when they're sleeping, you're thinking. Have they eaten? Are they okay? What do they need for school? Why are they suddenly quiet? Did they drink enough water? Sometimes you finally get a moment to yourself, only for your brain to remind you about something concerning the children.  It's like motherhood comes with an invisible "Mummy" tab that is permanently open in your brain. Getting time for yourself becomes a luxury Before children, you could decide to take a nap, watch a movie or simply sit quietly. Now, peace can feel like a special occasion...

The Nigerian Celebrity Culture: Why We Love Knowing What Celebrities Are Up To

Image
Nigerians love entertainment, and let's be honest, we also love gist.  Give us a celebrity relationship, a new movie, a fashion moment, a birthday celebration or an unexpected social media post, and suddenly everybody has an opinion. But why are we so interested in the lives of celebrities? For many people, celebrities represent a world that feels exciting and different from everyday life. We enjoy watching their movies, listening to their music and following their journeys. Social media has made that connection even stronger. Years ago, fans mostly saw celebrities on television, in newspapers and magazines. Today, we can see what our favourite stars are doing almost instantly through Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and other platforms. A celebrity can post something in the morning and, before the day is over, thousands of Nigerians are already discussing it. Sometimes it's their talent that gets people talking. Other times, it's their fashion, relationships, lifestyle or even...

Why Nigerian Movies Are Getting Better and What Viewers Really Want

Image
Nigerian entertainment has come a long way. If you grew up watching Nollywood movies years ago, you probably remember the familiar storylines, dramatic sound effects and those scenes that somehow made everybody in the house shout, “Ah! This woman is wicked!”  But things are changing. Nigerian filmmakers are experimenting with better storytelling, improved production quality and more realistic characters. Streaming platforms have also made it easier for Nigerian movies to reach audiences far beyond Nigeria. Today, viewers are becoming more selective. We don't just want a popular actor in a movie, we want a good story. A movie can have the biggest names in Nollywood, beautiful locations and expensive outfits, but if the storyline doesn't make sense, Nigerians will quickly notice. One thing I particularly enjoy about the new generation of Nigerian movies is the variety. We now see more stories about family, relationships, motherhood, friendship, culture, ambition and everyday N...

5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Mother

Image
Motherhood is one of those journeys you can read about, hear stories about, and still never completely understand until you experience it yourself. Before becoming a mother, there were many things I thought I understood. But experience has a way of teaching you differently. Here are five things I wish someone had told me earlier. 1. You will be tired, and still have to keep going Motherhood can be exhausting. There are days when you desperately need rest, but little people still need food, attention, bathing, school runs and plenty of other things. I've learned that asking for help when you need it isn't a weakness. 2. Every child is different What works perfectly for one child may not work for another. Children have different personalities, needs and temperaments. Motherhood has taught me to observe my children rather than constantly compare them with other children. 3. Your house may never look perfectly tidy With children around, toys appear from nowhere, clothes multiply ...

5 Things Motherhood Has Taught Me That Nobody Prepared Me For

Image
Motherhood is one of those journeys you can read a thousand books about, listen to advice from experienced mothers, and still discover something new every single day. Before becoming a mother, I thought I understood what motherhood meant. Now, I laugh when I remember how confident I was.  Here are five things motherhood has taught me that nobody really prepared me for. 1. You can be tired and still keep going. There are days when your body is begging for rest, but your children have other plans. Someone is hungry, someone needs attention, someone has misplaced something that was literally in their hands two minutes ago.  Motherhood has taught me that I am stronger than I thought, but also that rest is important whenever I can get it. 2. Children can turn a quiet house upside down in minutes. A clean house can remain clean for approximately five minutes when children are around.  Toys appear everywhere, food somehow gets to places food shouldn't be, and sometimes I find my...

I Started Blogging in 2014. Here's Why I Stopped and Why I'm Back

Image
I started blogging in 2014, long before I ever imagined that I would return to it more than a decade later. At the time, I was an ardent follower of Linda Ikeji's Blog and Stella Dimoko Korkus' Blog. I enjoyed reading blogs, following trending stories and keeping up with what was happening around me. Eventually, I found myself thinking, "Why can't I have something like this too?" That was how my blogging journey began. I created my blog and started sharing the things I found interesting—entertainment, news, fashion, lifestyle, relationships and trending stories. I was excited about having my own little space on the internet. Then life happened. The setback I got admission into university, and shortly after, I was robbed around campus. It might sound like a small thing today, but at that time, that phone meant everything to me. It was the only device I had for blogging because I couldn't afford a laptop. Losing it was a major setback. Without my phone, blogging...
